Hello, I'm filien
I have earned my B.F.A. in Graphic Design at Auburn University with a minor in community and civic engagement. I graduated May of 2018 with honors.
My passion for graphic design comes from its ability to communicate ideas and to solve problems. I love exploring how type, grid, and negative space interact to create interesting compositions.
I believe that design can be used for so much more than just advertising the newest commodity; design can educate, promote a cause, give a voice to those who do not have one, etc. Robert Peters said, “Design creates culture. Culture shapes values. Values determine the future.” This is our role as designers today; to ensure that we are creating work that leads to meaningful connections between people and groups. By being conscientious with our design, we can make a difference in the community and the world through producing positive interactions and relationships between people and groups.
Design is a powerful agent of social change and so pairing graphic design with a minor in community and civic engagement has only enriched my design education. It has allowed me to interact with other students and members of the community, outside of the design department, on projects and ideas. Interacting with people from varying backgrounds and majors each with a different perspective and skill has shown me that we are more powerful working together to create change than on our own and that is a wonderful thing. I enjoy being part of a community that works together to accomplish a positive result.

"The purpose of what we do as designers will remain fairly basic: to communicate
as effectively as we can those messages and ideas that we care most about."
— Rudy VanderLans
